Exercise: Visualize Your Story

I am someone with a very visual mind, able to see everything I hear, read, or write right in front of me. If I hear a song that relates to a scene in my story, or even just a character, I can see it in my mind. So this following exercise works for me a lot and I would like to share it with you. Hopefully you will be able to find inspiration.

Exercise: Go online and search for pictures or songs that match the vibe of your story.

I use Pinterest and Spotify myself, but you could use anything like a simple moodboard or save to your computer. Basically, I search for things that connect to my story. Main character has a dog? Put that specific breed in there. Does your main character have a special tattoo or hair color? Find a picture similar to it and throw it on the pile! Looking for a specific place where a scene will take place and need to visualize? Search for the vibe that you're looking for and see if you can find anything that matches what you are looking for. You could even save quotes that relate to your story. Anything that makes you connect to the story and gets you into the mood to write works.

I have face claims for a lot of characters. Of course, they are never going to look exactly like you imagined, but I like to find the closest actor or actress that looks like my characters.

For music it's a bit different. Honestly, I just listen to my favorite music like Disney (surprise, surprise) or musical numbers and I often find a song that fits for the story as I listen.

Conclusion And One Last Tip

Don't try to find the perfect image or song. You can't unless you write or make it yourself. The point is to find something that can relate to your story enough to make you visualize your scene or character.

So, I hope this exercise will help you as much as it helps me. Do you have something like this already? What do you like to use to visualize your novel? Let me know, I would love to hear your own experience!
