Plotting vs Pantsing

Intro

There are a lot of different ways to write a book. Some people outline their chapters and start writing, others need to have their worldbuilding characters and plots 100% outlined before they can even start writing. There are also people who just don't do any outlining and have a small idea in their head that they just start writing.

There really is no right way to write your novel, everyone has their own way of writing. But let's dive into the different methods of writing and see what the pros and cons can be of this method.

Disclaimer: What works for one person, doesn't work for another. That doesn't mean it's the wrong method. Everyone has something that works or doesn't work. Be nice and don't judge people for what method they like to use.

Plotters

Plotters have the biggest array of options to use when it comes to writing. There are tons of methods like the snowflake method, the hero's journey, save the cat, and many more. There are so many different ways of developing that for me it can sometimes be overwhelming as to what to use.

Plotters tend to have everything thought out before they actually start writing. They make detailed character sheets, have their world fully developed and, if it's fantasy, a full magic system. Their story bible has to be complete before they can start on the story.

Pros of being a plotter

  • You can catch plot holes before you actually start writing
  • You know what to write, because it is all listed for you
  •  Easier to write more words per day

Cons of being a plotter

  • You can get stuck into plotting instead of actually writing the story
  • Less creative freedom while writing

Pantsers

Pantsers are people who write at 'the seat of their pants'. They have an idea and just start writing. No plotting, or barely any plotting at all. Maybe they plot the general idea and work out a few basic characters and settings, but that's it. Other than that, they just start writing their first draft without thinking too much.

 Pros of being a pantser

  • More creative freedom. You write what comes to mind and let your characters lead the story.
  • Discovering your own story as you write.

Cons of being a pantser

  • More editing and fixing plot holes
  • More chance to get stuck on what to write next

Plansters

This is a mix between a planner and a pantser. Plantsers tend to develop their story but write at the same time. For example, they plan a chapter, write the chapter, plan the next chapter, write that chapter, and so on. Another way for plantsers is to plan when they are stuck. When they really don't know what to write, they can start planning and figuring out what would be the next best step. Their planning is never very detailed.

Pros of being a Plantser

  • A bit of variety during the writing process
  • Still discovery writing, but also still the fun of plotting

Cons of being a plantser

  • Often unable to keep writing the story

What Do I Like To Use?

I am definitly a plotter. I like to plot everything out, but I also kind of fall into the trap of always plotting and never writing. I tend to never finish anything... But I keep trying and someday I will finish that fanfiction or book. I do enjoy creating characters and plotting out what comes next to the story. In my mind everything needs to flow well before I can actually start writing, but I can't say that is a good thing I have.

Conclusion

So what method do you use? Are you a plotter or pantser? Or maybe a Plantser? Let me know in the comments, I would love to know what you do!
