Promp #9: Rolling The Dice

A bit of a different 'prompt' today, but I think this could be a fun writing tip or exercise. Are you ever stuck on a minor thing in your story, having a few options in your mind, but not knowing which one would be the best to choose? Grab a dice or random number generator and let the dice decide!

I would recommend doing this for the smaller things that won't change the plot drastically. Is your character at a restaurant and you have no idea what they'll choose to order? Make a list of foods that fit the restaurant and roll. You could even roll multiple times for drinks, appetizers, main course and desert if you want to go all the way. Writing a fantasy book and you catch yourself making your main character use the same spell every time? Make a list of the spells and roll for variation!

You could even go a more Dungeons & Dragons way and in some cases let the dice decide if they succeed or not. Maybe a character is practicing spells, or making potions. It can honestly be anything. This is something I go back to sometimes for my own writing. And remember, it isn't set in stone once you rolled. If you realize something else works better, then go ahead and change it.

While it would be interesting to write a book on random rolls and prompts, I recommend using this method for more minor things and only when you need them. But hey, if you want to write your own random generated adventure, go for it! I would honestly also read that!

So, what do you think of today's prompt? Have you ever used this method in your story? What was it for and what was the outcome? Did you stick with it or change it in the end? I would love to read everyone's experience with something like this. Also, if you have a different method for something like this, also don't be shy to share. We learn from each other!
